Turkel was born in an ethnically Jewish family and raised with her mom in Manhattan. By 16 years old, she was studying under Sanford Meisner and Philip Burton in the Neighborhood playhouse and in the American Musical and Dramatic Academy. Diana Vreeland, the editor-in-chief of Vogue Magazine had Ann along with photographer Richard Avedon shoot Ann's first Vogue cover within a couple of few days. Ann went on to become one of the most well-known models in America, appearing as a cover model in top magazines like Vogue Bazaar or Cosmopolitan. Ann was a successful model for various cosmetic companies including Max Factor Revlon, Chanel and Europe in Europe after two years.
